Purpose & Meaning Since 1985 LIFO (Living Instruments For Others), has been taking young professionals, and college and high school students to the Dominican Republic and Guatemala to do lay missionary work. Coordinating with Catholic and other Non-Governmental Organizations in the country, LIFO has focused on helping small villages in the interior of the country with two basic needs-, clean water and schools. LIFO does not go to teach, but to learn from the campesinos (rural farmers) themselves. LIFO's main task is to work closely with the communities and their leaders in supporting and enhancing their desired projects. The work on the project itself is a secondary goal, the purpose of the mission is to foster growth and community. Each mission hopes to show both residents and LIFO volunteers the strength and spiritual rewards that exist when we all work together for a greater goal. Since 1985 LIFO has built many developmental projects throughout the Cibao region, a very mountainous and neglected area in the interior of the Dominican Republic. All the communities have the same characteristics; they are each well organized, very poor and have a specific need that can be supported by the community itself. The mission to many is seen as an opportunity to go to on an exotic trip, to a place they will never go again, and feel good about it afterwards, but the intent of the LIFO mission is to open volunteers eyes to how 80 percent of the people on earth live. It is the hope of the mission to show volunteers the blessings we enjoy in this country and that missionary work must be done here in how we lead our lives each and every day. How we live our lives will also serve as an example of the impact the Lord has had on our lives through the LIFO Mission.
